It is quite possible that the pattern of free quilt blocks you have belong to either of these two categories, as these two categories are most common one. But there are also other possible blocks. For instance, 16 units are used for making a Sailboat block. It is made in four rows of four. Five Patch Quilt Blocks: This block can be grouped into 25 units. It is made up in five rows of five. Its finished block size also must be divisible by five. Seven Patch Quilt Blocks: This block can be grouped into 49 units. It is made in seven rows of seven. It can be used in those finished block sizes that can be divided by seven. As far as the size of your quilt block is concerned, it depends on the size of quilt required and the type of block you select. Hopefully, now you will be able to categorize and recognize the different quilt blocks.
