Types of Quilt Material
If you are planning to purchase material for quilt then there are certain things that you should keep in mind. Always go for new quilt material because they are good in quality. While you are looking for quilt material fabric is the first thing, you look for. There are several types of fabric available in market such as polyesters, cotton and rayon. Generally, people prefer natural fibers especially like cotton fabric for quilt because of their higher quality and softness. It is advised that pattern background and the quilt’s back should be made from unbleached muslin, percale or linen. Strong tight woven fabric should be used for making patches. Drapery or upholstery is not recommended, as they will fray easily. To know about the quantity of material you require, you just need to measure the length and breadth of the mattress. It is advised that you should measure it twice to get accurate measure. However, if the mattress is old, then it becomes essential. Besides the measuring of height of bed frame is also essential so that you have an idea how much quilt you want to hang on both sides. Actually, the size of quilt depends on its use. Let’s consider that it will be used as a bedspread to cover the pillows during daytime; then obviously it must be bigger in size. While if it is to be used as a coverlet during nighttime to get warmth then, it may be 17 inches shorter than the size of the mattress, as you do not need to cover pillows then. It will be used for one person and it is kept folded at the bed during day. Next thing that you need to determine while purchasing quilt material is the color selection. You can choose from either small colors range like red, orange and pink or complementary colors to give a vibrant touch to the quilt. If you have chosen a picture pattern, then colors are already decided. However, if you opt for a fabric with a pattern on it, then you will require using some solid colors to save it from being mess. It will not strain the eyes of onlookers. After selecting the fabric for quilt, check the durability of quilt by washing and ironing it. Next, you have to choose quilt material for batting. It is a very important part of the whole quilting process. The material for quilting is often decided according to the required weight, depth, or softness. There is no fixed material; variety of materials can be used for the batting. You can use cotton, polyester or wool for batting. Generally, it is tough to make difference between cotton and polyester merely by feeling. However, polyester fibers are rougher between the top and back than cotton fibers. The quality of the quilt largely depends on the quilt material, you choose. So, make sure that while purchasing quilting material, you are considering not only the look of the quilt, but also the comfort that it will provide.
